  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution paying tribute to Police Officer

  3         Johnnie Norris Patterson, Jr.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Police Officer Johnnie Norris Patterson, Jr.,

  6  was born March 14, 1971, in Fort Bragg, N.C., the son of

  7  Johnnie N. and Gloria A. Patterson, and

  8         WHEREAS, Officer Johnnie Patterson was employed by the

  9  Winter Haven Police Department on June 24, 1996, as a Police

10  Officer I, having served as an auxiliary officer with the

11  department for the ten months immediately preceding, and

12         WHEREAS, with his father riding with him through the

13  police ride-along program, Officer Patterson was gunned down

14  on March 8, 1997, after making a routine traffic stop, the

15  first Winter Haven police officer in four decades to meet his

16  death in the line of duty, and

17         WHEREAS, more than 3,000 public safety officers

18  converged on Winter Haven to join with mourners to pay their

19  respects to the young officer, and

20         WHEREAS, Police Officer Johnnie Norris Patterson, Jr.,

21  will be remembered with gratitude and pride as one who gave

22  his all in the performance of the work he loved, NOW,

23  THEREFORE,

25  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

26  Florida:

28         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

29  deliberations to pay tribute to Police Officer Johnnie Norris

30  Patterson, Jr.

  1         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  2  be presented to Johnnie N. Patterson, Sr., and Gloria A.

  4  sentiments expressed herein.
