Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9099 By Representative Minton 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution expressing appreciation to Arthur 3 William "Bink" Glisson. 4 5 WHEREAS, Wellington pioneer Arthur William "Bink" 6 Glisson, who lived on Wellington before it acquired its name, 7 was born August 2, 1914, at Welaka, on the St. Johns River, 8 and, as an infant, was brought by his parents to Palm Beach 9 County, where he has continued to reside since that time, and 10 WHEREAS, Bink Glisson survived the ravages of the 11 devastating hurricanes of 1926 and 1928 and has since 12 witnessed many changes in the Glades area, some wrought by 13 nature, some by time, and some by Bink himself, and 14 WHEREAS, Bink Glisson saw action in the Pacific Theater 15 during World War II as a member of the United States Navy, 16 and, while stationed at Key West, met Edward R. Stettinius, 17 Secretary of State under President Roosevelt, a meeting which 18 was to change the direction of Bink's life, and 19 WHEREAS, after the war, Bink Glisson became associated 20 with Mr. Stettinius as estate superintendent, boat captain, 21 and trusted friend and, after the death of Stettinius, Bink 22 helped his widow sell the estate to C.O. Wellington, and 23 WHEREAS, continuing to act as agent for Wellington, 24 Bink Glisson eventually amassed an area of 18,000 acres and 25 formed the Acme Drainage District, later to become the Acme 26 Improvement District, which allowed drainage of the acreage, 27 thus making the land suitable for farming and ranching, and 28 WHEREAS, as its first employee, Bink Glisson served as 29 supervisor and executive director of Acme for 40 years, during 30 which time 10,000 acres of the district were sold to Jim Nall, 31 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
