Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9111 By Representative Boyd 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution honoring the Monticello Opera 3 House, Inc., for 25 years of tireless effort in 4 the restoration of the Monticello Opera House 5 and in sponsoring quality arts programming for 6 North Florida. 7 8 WHEREAS, the Monticello Opera House, formerly known as 9 the Perkins Building and Perkins Opera House, was placed on 10 the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was 11 designated a landmark of American Music by the National Music 12 Council on April 15, 1976, and 13 WHEREAS, in March 1972, as the result of action by a 14 Florida State University-affiliated group, the Monticello 15 Opera Company was born, a professional nonprofit opera 16 repertory organization whose goal was to provide opportunities 17 for young performers and to restore the "acoustically perfect" 18 Opera House, and 19 WHEREAS, in December 1972, the Board of Directors of 20 the newly created Monticello Opera House, Inc., changed its 21 focus to place emphasis first on restoration of the Opera 22 House, with performances to come later, and is succeeding 23 admirably with both goals, and 24 WHEREAS, the Monticello Opera House, Inc., which 25 manages the Monticello Opera House, celebrates its silver 26 anniversary year in 1997, and 27 WHEREAS, since 1986, the Artists-in-the-Schools 28 Program, developed and coordinated by the Monticello Opera 29 House, has provided fine arts programming to students in North 30 Florida, thus playing a critical role in the education and 31 cultural enrichment of children, and 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions. Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9111 590-111-97 1 WHEREAS, the State of Florida recognizes the Monticello 2 Opera House, not only as one of its treasured 3 turn-of-the-century historic landmarks, but also as a rural 4 center for the performing arts in North Florida and a sponsor 5 of quality arts programs which serve neighboring North Florida 6 counties, and 7 WHEREAS, the Monticello Opera House, Inc., will 8 continue to serve as an anchor to the best of Florida's past 9 and as an achievement of both past and present, NOW, 10 THEREFORE, 11 12 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 13 Florida: 14 15 That the House of Representatives hereby commends the 16 Monticello Opera House, Inc., for its valuable programs which 17 contribute to the cultural education and awareness of our 18 citizens in North Florida. 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution 20 be presented to Katie Marshall Andersen, Executive Director of 21 the Monticello Opera House, Inc.; Nancy Wideman, School 22 Program Coordinator; Helen Rouse, Office Administrator; and 23 John Trimble, Chairman, as a tangible token of the sentiments 24 expressed herein. 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 2
