  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing MainStreet DeLand as

  3         the winner of the "Great American Main Street

  4         Award," a national award presented by the

  5         National Trust for Historic Preservation.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, Henry A. DeLand and the city's early settlers

  8  built a community around a thriving downtown area, and

  9         WHEREAS, this downtown area was and remains the

10  centerpiece and pride of the community, and

11         WHEREAS, the downtown district had fallen into a

12  dilapidated state with a high vacancy rate and ill-maintained

13  buildings, and

14         WHEREAS, the MainStreet DeLand Association was founded

15  in 1985 by community leaders and citizens with the challenge

16  of bringing about the revitalization of downtown DeLand, and

17         WHEREAS, the City of DeLand has pledged its financial

18  and moral support for this effort over the past 12 years and

19  the MainStreet DeLand Association with the City of DeLand were

20  recognized with an award from the Secretary of State for

21  outstanding public/private partnership, and

22         WHEREAS, MainStreet DeLand Association has been

23  successful in forming the partnerships with all sectors of the

24  community to continue the ongoing rebirth of the downtown

25  area, and

26         WHEREAS, through its efforts in economic development,

27  historic preservation, and marketing, MainStreet DeLand

28  Association has once again returned downtown DeLand to a

29  beautiful and economically vital center for business and

30  retail, and

  1         WHEREAS, the City of DeLand was chosen as the first

  2  officially designated Main Street City in Florida and

  3  continues to be a model for its achievements in downtown

  4  revitalization and is worthy of national recognition, and

  5         WHEREAS, MainStreet Deland Association is being

  6  recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation

  7  having won "The Great American Main Street Award,"  NOW,

  8  THEREFORE,

10  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

11  Florida:

13         That the House of Representatives hereby

14  enthusiastically congratulates the MainStreet DeLand

15  Association for its recent recognition as the winner of the

16  "Great American Main Street Award."
