  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing the 75th anniversary

  3         of the Florida League of Cities, Inc., and

  4         proclaiming April 9, 1997, "Florida League of

  5         Cities Day."

  7         WHEREAS, 1997 marks the 75th anniversary of the Florida

  8  League of Cities, Inc., an organization which has been a

  9  united voice for the cities, towns, and villages of this

10  state, and

11         WHEREAS, in 1922, a group of city officials gathered in

12  Tampa to discuss the plight of cities and the need to stand

13  together before the Florida Legislature and Cabinet, the

14  Congress of the United States, and the various state and

15  federal agencies, and thus the Florida Municipal League was

16  formed, and

17         WHEREAS, with the state's tremendous growth and

18  corresponding increase in the number of cities, the League

19  added new and innovative programs for its members, changing

20  its name in 1970 to the Florida League of Cities, Inc., with

21  its permanent home in Tallahassee, and

22         WHEREAS, home to nearly half of the state's population,

23  the 398 dedicated municipal governments in Florida are the

24  providers of numerous services, and each city, town, and

25  village strives to be effective and efficient for its

26  citizens, and

27         WHEREAS, through the League, which represents over 95

28  percent of Florida's municipalities, elected city officials

29  have valiantly sought to preserve the Home Rule authority

30  granted in the Florida Constitution and to ensure the

  1  independent status of cities, which are the cornerstones of

  2  American democracy, and

  3         WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities, Inc., the

  4  largest state municipal association in the nation, works

  5  actively with its counterparts around America and with the

  6  National League of Cities, and

  7         WHEREAS, the League's annual Legislative Action Day

  8  provides a timely opportunity for recognition of this

  9  significant anniversary in the history of the League and of

10  the commitment of its members to work with the Legislature,

11  NOW, THEREFORE,

13  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

14  Florida:

15

16         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

17  deliberations to congratulate the Florida League of Cities,

18  Inc., on its 75th anniversary and hereby proclaims April 9,

19  1997, "Florida League of Cities Day."
