Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9211 By Representative Reddick 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution commending the Macon Community for 3 outstanding dedication to their community. 4 5 WHEREAS, the Macon Community was founded on 360 acres 6 purchased in 1876 by an African-American entrepreneur named 7 Henry Macon, Sr., and 8 WHEREAS, the Macon Community is a close-knit community 9 where children play in the streets, residents know their 10 neighbors, and the older people sit on their porches and talk, 11 and 12 WHEREAS, the Macon Community established a neighborhood 13 association in May 1993, and since then it has held three 14 school and community reunions, staged two major neighborhood 15 clean-ups, established a crime watch network, revived 1976 16 negotiations with the city officials on the creation of a 17 neighborhood park to be named "Macon Community Park," and 18 WHEREAS, phase one of the construction of the park is 19 partially completed, and 20 WHEREAS, in 1995, the Macon Community was selected as 21 the "Neighborhood of the Year," by the Council of Neighborhood 22 Associations, and "Neighborhood of the Year," in Crime 23 Prevention by the Tallahassee Urban League, and 24 WHEREAS, the community was nominated again in 1996 to 25 be honored for its efforts in crime prevention, and 26 WHEREAS, the Macon Community organized and launched its 27 first Community Egg Hunt and Balloon Release, which were 28 designed for, and involved the youth, and 29 WHEREAS, the Macon Community is presently negotiating 30 and raising funds to buy back its historic Macon Schoolhouse 31 to be used as a museum and community center in an effort to 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
