  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing and commending the

  3         Bragan family and the Jacksonville Suns upon

  4         the occasion of their winning the 1996 Southern

  5         League Championship.

  7         WHEREAS, the Bragan Family, Peter D. Bragan, Sr., Mary

  8  Frances Bragan, Peter D. Bragan, Jr., and Bonita Bragan, is

  9  well known throughout the City of Jacksonville for its

10  generous community spirit and dedication to excellence, and

11         WHEREAS, the Bragans have owned and operated

12  Jacksonville's baseball club, the Jacksonville Suns, since

13  September 1984, and 2,493,944 fans have enjoyed regular season

14  baseball at Wolfson Park since that time, and

15         WHEREAS, the Suns have been members of the Southern

16  League for the past twenty-seven seasons, the longest current

17  streak of any city in the league, and have completed their

18  second season as an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, with the

19  1996 roster including:  Staff:  Larry Parrish (2nd half

20  Manager), Bill Plummer (1st half Manager), Jeff Jones

21  (Pitching Coach), Mark Meleski (Coach), and Bryan Goike

22  (Trainer); Pitchers:  Brian Barnes, Kenny Carlyle, Blas

23  Cedeno, Matt Drews, Mike Drumright, Ramon Fermin, Eddie

24  Gaillard, Rick Greene, Jim Gutierrez, John Kelly, Brian

25  Moehler, Scott Norman, Brandon Reed, John Rosengren, Michael

26  Salazar, Matt Skrmetta, and Sean Whiteside; and Players:  Glen

27  Barker, Scott Bream, Tarrik Brock, Raul Casanova, Frank

28  Catalanotto, John Cotton, Jamie Dismuke, Sean Freeman, Luis

29  Garcia, Terrel Hansen, Keith Kimsey, Kevin Lidle, Scott

30  Makarewicz, Justin Mashore, Tony Mitchell, Phil Nevin, Clyde

  1  Pough, David Roberts, Tom Schmidt, Billy Thompson, and Bubba

  2  Trammell, and

  3         WHEREAS, the Suns hold Southern League records for Most

  4  Home Runs in a Season, 200; Most Extra Base Hits in a Season,

  5  473; Most Times Hit by a Pitch in a Game, 5; and Most Times

  6  Hit by a Pitch in a Season, 79; have been in the playoffs a

  7  record ten times; and have been in the finals six times, and

  8         WHEREAS, the Suns won both the first half of the season

  9  and the second half of the season before going on to claim the

10  1996 Southern League Championship three-games-to-one in the

11  finals against the Chattanooga Lookouts, and

12         WHEREAS, the Bragan Family and the Jacksonville Suns

13  have brought positive recognition to the City of Jacksonville,

14  and the community is very proud of their accomplishments, NOW,

15  THEREFORE,

17  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

18  Florida:

20         That the Florida House of Representatives hereby

21  recognizes and commends the Bragan Family and the Jacksonville

22  Suns for their generous community spirit and outstanding

23  athletic achievement, demonstrated by winning the 1996

24  Southern League Championship, and hereby expresses its

25  appreciation to both the Bragans and the Suns for the positive

26  recognition they have brought to their community and for their

27  continuing efforts to provide wholesome family recreation for

28  the citizens of Duval County.
