  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Jose A. Mijares, M.D.

  3

  4         WHEREAS, Jose A. Mijares, M.D., was born in 1920 in

  5  Santa Clara, Cuba, a city founded by his ancestors in 1689,

  6  and

  7         WHEREAS, having graduated from the University of Havana

  8  in 1943 with a degree in medicine, Dr. Mijares served his

  9  nation in its Navy for 15 years, until Cuba fell to communism

10  in 1959, and

11         WHEREAS, during World War II, while he was in the Cuban

12  Navy, Dr. Mijares was assigned convoy duty with the United

13  States Navy, during which time his services were recognized by

14  President Harry S. Truman, and

15         WHEREAS, Dr. Mijares provided his surgical services in

16  1950 and 1951 to the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia,

17  treating Marines who had been wounded during the Korean

18  Conflict, and, from 1953 to 1955, served as assistant naval

19  attache assigned to the Cuban Embassy in Washington, and

20         WHEREAS, Dr. Mijares moved to Tampa in 1960, and has

21  lived there since that time, becoming a United States citizen

22  in 1965, and entering private practice in 1967 as a general

23  and thoracic surgeon, and

24         WHEREAS, in addition to many other accomplishments, Dr.

25  Mijares is the principal founder and owner of Town & Country

26  Hospital and is the inventor of a surgical clamp which bears

27  his name, the Mijares-Allis Forceps, and

28         WHEREAS, Dr. Mijares, military man, author, inventor,

29  physician, and, most importantly, family man, has retired

30  after 53 years of medical practice, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  3

  4         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

  5  deliberations to honor Jose A. Mijares, M.D., for his

  6  outstanding contributions.

  7         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  8  be presented to Dr. Jose A. Mijares as a tangible token of the

  9  sentiments expressed herein.
