  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Chipola Junior College on

  3         the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College has provided

  6  educational opportunities to the residents of Calhoun, Holmes,

  7  Jackson, Liberty, and Washington Counties since 1947, and

  8         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College has been known as an

  9  innovator since 1947 when the Department of Education coined

10  the term "The Chipola Index," an index of the effect that a

11  community college in a geographic area will have on the number

12  of students from that area who go to college, and

13         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College, from its founding, has

14  had two features that were unusual in a junior college,

15  residence halls and free school bus transportation, and

16         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College's legendary coach

17  Milton Johnson (now retired), is known as the "winningest"

18  coach in Florida community college basketball and has brought

19  national acclaim to Chipola Junior College and to the State of

20  Florida, and

21         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College is the college of

22  choice for many Florida Undergraduate Scholars and has also

23  achieved outstanding success with under-prepared students, and

24         WHEREAS, data from the Department of Education, the

25  Division of Community Colleges, and the State University

26  System prove that by every available measure of success,

27  Chipola Junior College graduates excel, and

28         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College students have a high

29  rate of success on the statewide College Level Academic Skills

30  Test and perform far above the state average on most licensure

31  examinations, and

  1         WHEREAS, Chipola Junior College is the alma mater of

  2  former House Members Leonard Hall, John Angus McDonald, Sam

  3  Mitchell, Herb Morgan, and Robert Trammell, and current House

  4  Members Debbie Horan and Jamey Westbrook, NOW, THEREFORE,

  5

  6  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  7  Florida:

  8

  9         That Chipola Junior College be commended for its many

10  outstanding accomplishments and congratulated on the occasion

11  of its Golden Anniversary.

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

13  be presented to Chipola Junior College as a tangible token of

14  the sentiments expressed herein.
