2 A resolution proclaiming July 4, 1997, as
3 "Governor Stone Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Governor Stone, a two-masted, gaff-rigged,
6 topmast schooner built in 1877, is the oldest near-shore
7 shipping vessel in operation on the Gulf Coast, and
8 WHEREAS, designated in 1991 by the United States
9 Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark,
10 the Governor Stone was engaged in near-water activities along
11 the Gulf Coast of Florida from 1877 to 1938 and during World
12 War II served with distinction as a Merchant Marine training
13 vessel, and
14 WHEREAS, currently owned by the Apalachicola Maritime
15 Institute, Inc., the Governor Stone continues to sail the
16 shallow waters for which she was designed, offering one-day,
17 two-day, and six-day charters and sail training in the bays
18 and inland waters along the Upper Gulf of Mexico, and
19 WHEREAS, the Governor Stone, the pride of the residents
20 of Apalachicola, is instrumental in fostering a deep respect
21 for the nation's maritime traditions of boat building and sail
22 training, and is an inspiration to boat builders, historians,
23 and tourists alike, NOW, THEREFORE,

25 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
26 Florida:

28 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
29 deliberations to pay tribute to the historic schooner Governor
30 Stone and to proclaim Friday, July 4, 1997, "Governor Stone
31 Day" in Florida.
