2 A resolution honoring Eldrick "Tiger" Woods,
3 winner of the 61st Masters Golf Tournament.

5 WHEREAS, on Sunday, April 13, 1997, professional golfer
6 Eldrick "Tiger" Woods provided the nation and the world with a
7 genuinely transcendent moment in the history of sports, and
8 WHEREAS, just days before the 50th anniversary of
9 Jackie Robinson's historic breaking of Major League Baseball's
10 color barrier, 21-year-old Tiger Woods of Orlando became the
11 first man of color to win a major golf championship with a
12 record-setting victory at golf's most prestigious tournament,
13 the Masters, and
14 WHEREAS, Sunday's victory at the Masters Tournament was
15 the culmination of an explosive entry into the world of
16 professional golf which began only nine months ago and which
17 has captivated the attention of the sports world, and
18 WHEREAS, in winning the Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods
19 broke the standing scoring record at the Masters by shooting
20 an 18-under-par 270, and also, at age 21, became the youngest
21 Masters Tournament champion in history, and
22 WHEREAS, Tiger Woods so overpowered the field of
23 competition at the Masters Tournament that he finished with a
24 12-shot margin over second-place finisher Tom Kite, thus
25 setting a record for the widest margin of victory at the
26 Masters, and
27 WHEREAS, his score of 270 also set a Masters record low
28 score for 72 holes, and
29 WHEREAS, of the fifteen tournaments in which Tiger
30 Woods has participated since becoming a professional in August
31 1996, he has finished first in four of those tournaments, with

1 total PGA tour earnings in that nine-month period of
2 $1,756,944, and
3 WHEREAS, rarely, if ever, has the world of golf seen
4 the advent of a new talent of this magnitude, and
5 WHEREAS, the impact upon and implications for the world
6 of golf and the world of sports of Tiger Woods' ascendency to
7 such a superior level of achievement at such a young age is
8 truly nothing short of phenomenal, and
9 WHEREAS, Tiger Woods' victory at the 61st Masters Golf
10 Tournament firmly establishes him as the preeminent
11 professional golfer in the world today and as a new and
12 inspiring standard for athletes, minorities, and the youth of
13 the world, NOW, THEREFORE,

15 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
16 Florida:

18 That the House of Representatives of the State of
19 Florida hereby extends its sincere congratulations to Eldrick
20 "Tiger" Woods for his record-setting victory at the 61st
21 Masters Golf Tournament and applauds him for his inspirational
22 accomplishments in the world of professional sports.
23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
24 be presented to Eldrick "Tiger" Woods as a tangible token of
25 the sentiments expressed herein.
