Florida House of Representatives - 1997 HR 9253 By Representatives Starks, Fuller, Thrasher, Villalobos, Valdes, Sembler, Harrington, Diaz de la Portilla, Morse, Rojas, Bitner and Rodriguez-Chomat 1 House Resolution 2 A resolution recommending the Governor exercise 3 his veto authority by striking any 4 appropriation of funds for fiscal year 5 1997-1998 that supports any embassy operations 6 in Vietnam. 7 8 WHEREAS, the Vietnam Conflict was a costly and tragic 9 period in America's history, and 10 WHEREAS, over 480,000 Floridians served in the Armed 11 Forces of their country and represented their communities and 12 families during the era of this conflict, and 13 WHEREAS, 83 Floridians were listed as Prisoners of War 14 or Missing in Action in Southeast Asia, and 15 WHEREAS, 1,958 of the 480,000 Floridians who served in 16 this war were killed in action, and 17 WHEREAS, the Government of Vietnam has failed to 18 provide a full accounting of Americans missing or killed in 19 action, and 20 WHEREAS, the Conference Report on Senate Bill 2400 21 contains an appropriation of $270,000 in General Revenue funds 22 for the purpose of supporting a Southeast Trade Operations 23 Center in the soon to be established Vietnam American Embassy 24 Office, NOW, THEREFORE, 25 26 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of 27 Florida: 28 29 That the House of Representatives of the State of 30 Florida urges the Governor, pursuant to his authority under 31 Section 8(a) of Article III of the State Constitution, to veto 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
