Brice joined the marines at age 17 to 5 serve his country during World War II, and 6 WHEREAS, John "Bob" Brice saw action on Guadalcanal, 7 Bougenville, Green Island, Guam, and Iwo Jima and was the 8 first marine on top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima and helped 9 raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi, which historic 10 event was immortalized in a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph, 11 and 12 WHEREAS, Bob Brice received many honors, including the 13 Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, and the Purple 14 Heart, and 15 WHEREAS, after the war, Bob Brice graduated from the 16 University of Michigan and joined his family in starting a 17 resort business in Cuba, where he later married his wife 18 Norma, but ultimately lost the business when Fidel Castro 19 confiscated it after taking control of Cuba, and 20 WHEREAS, after starting over again, Bob and Norma Brice 21 moved to Miami where he founded an advertising company, many 22 of the customers of which suffered devastating losses from 23 Hurricane Andrew, and 24 WHEREAS, Bob Brice allowed his home, one of few to be 25 spared by the hurricane, to be used by his less fortunate 26 neighbors as a shelter for many weeks after the hurricane's 27 devastation and worked indefatigably to help his neighbors and 28 his business customers to rebuild their homes and businesses 29 after the hurricane, NOW, THEREFORE, 30 31 1 CODING: Words stricken are deletions; words underlined are additions.
