  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Florida's veterans of

  3         World War II.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, there are currently 610,000 World War II

  6  veterans residing in the State of Florida, and

  7         WHEREAS, though it has been 52 years since the end of

  8  World War II, these veterans still are not honored by a

  9  national or state war memorial, and

10         WHEREAS, legislation authorizing a national memorial

11  honoring World War II veterans was introduced in Congress 10

12  years ago, in 1987, and

13         WHEREAS, because of years of debate over the project,

14  and because a design for the memorial has failed to be

15  approved by the Commission of Fine Arts and the National

16  Capital Planning Commission, a national memorial has yet to

17  become a reality, and

18         WHEREAS, it has been estimated that the nation is

19  losing World War II veterans at the rate of 1,000 each day, or

20  30,000 per month, and

21         WHEREAS, time is running out for the opportunity to

22  honor these brave military soldiers and nurses during their

23  lifetime, and

24         WHEREAS, the State of Florida recognizes the high moral

25  purpose and idealism that motivated this nation's defenders in

26  the defining event of the 20th century, and

27         WHEREAS, the State of Florida hereby honors its

28  veterans for their sacrifices and commitment to the common

29  defense of the nation and to the broader causes of securing

30  freedom from tyranny and the restoration of peace throughout

31  the world, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida hereby honors the residents of the State of Florida

  6  who served their country in World War II.
