  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring community activist Cherry

  3         Harris.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, Cherry Harris, longtime community activist

  6  from Clearwater, died of cancer on Friday, September 19, 1997,

  7  at the age of 86, and

  8         WHEREAS, born in the rural town of Kitchen Mill, South

  9  Carolina, the tenth of fifteen children and the granddaughter

10  of a freed slave, Cherry Harris worked tirelessly during her

11  lifetime for the betterment of the North Greenwood community

12  in Clearwater, and served as an inspiration to the entire

13  community, and

14         WHEREAS, besides helping to raise money for numerous

15  organizations, Cherry Harris was active in the NAACP, the

16  North Greenwood Association, the Sickle Cell Anemia

17  Foundation, and the Sgt. Allen Moore Partnership, an antidrug

18  group for young people, and

19         WHEREAS, Cherry Harris participated in every Martin

20  Luther King, Jr., parade since walking with the civil rights

21  leader during the 1963 march on Washington, and spent

22  countless hours encouraging people to get involved in

23  community activities and affairs, and

24         WHEREAS, Cherry Harris' pet project was to get people

25  to register to vote and go to the polls, spending every

26  Saturday for more than a dozen years registering citizens to

27  vote, and

28         WHEREAS, Cherry Harris was an invaluable resource for

29  the citizens of the Clearwater area, whose counsel and

30  approval was often sought by citizens and political leaders,

  1  and whose guidance, leadership, and commitment to the

  2  Clearwater community will be greatly missed, NOW, THEREFORE,

  3

  4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida:

  7         That the House of Representatives of the State of

  8  Florida hereby honors Cherry Harris for her years of selfless

  9  devotion to the betterment of Clearwater and the community of

10  North Greenwood.
