  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the Raines High School

  3         varsity football team for winning the 1997

  4         Class 4A State Championship.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, on the night of December 20, 1997, the William

  7  Marion Raines Senior High School varsity football team

  8  accomplished what no other public high school football team in

  9  Duval County has done since the Florida High School Activities

10  Association was formed in 1963, and

11         WHEREAS, Raines won the 1997 Class 4A State

12  Championship in football by beating Belle Glade Glades Central

13  32-27 and finishing their season 15-0, and

14         WHEREAS, in this game, quarterback Mack Frazier set

15  state championship records for most yards passing (349) and

16  longest touchdown pass (82), and receiver Maurice Harris set

17  state championship records for most receiving yards (180) and

18  longest touchdown pass reception (82), and

19         WHEREAS, for this season, nine players were named to

20  the All State team, eleven to the All Area team, five to the

21  All Conference team, and four to the All District team, and

22         WHEREAS, in addition, defensive end Corey Brown was

23  named All Area Defensive Player of the Year, and quarterback

24  Mack Frazier was named All Conference Offensive Most Valuable

25  Player of the Year, and

26         WHEREAS, Head Coach Welton E. Coffey, II, attributes

27  the team's first football state championship to discipline,

28  organization, and success in prayer, and

29         WHEREAS, Coach Coffey praised the team's classroom

30  success, exemplified by the first 9-week grading period in

31  which 24 players earned a 3.0 grade point average or better,

  1  eighteen of whom were on the A/B honor roll, and one player

  2  earned a 4.14 grade point average, and

  3         WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of the Raines

  4  High School varsity football team and their coaches, assistant

  5  coaches, and cheerleaders be commended for this great

  6  accomplishment and stellar example of dedication, hard work,

  7  discipline, and teamwork, NOW, THEREFORE,

  8

  9  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

10  Florida:

12         That the Florida House of Representatives hereby

13  commends the William Marion Raines Senior High School varsity

14  football team for winning the 1997 Class 4A State

15  Championship, and applauds the outstanding efforts of the

16  team's members, coaches, and cheerleaders in making such a

17  superlative season possible.

18         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

19  be presented to the principal of Raines High School as a

20  tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
