  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending Detective Chris McManus

  3         of the Miami-Dade Police Department and

  4         Officers Julian Guerra, Yojans Martinez, and

  5         Mario Pena of the Hialeah Police Department for

  6         heroism in the line of duty.

  7

  8         WHEREAS, Detective Chris McManus of the Miami-Dade

  9  Police Department, and Officers Julian Guerra, Yojans

10  Martinez, and Mario Pena of the Hialeah Police Department were

11  conducting a joint investigation on July 1, 1997, when they

12  were advised that a man was driving a car in Hialeah with a

13  dead person in the front seat and telling acquaintances that

14  he was going to confront and "kill a cop," and

15         WHEREAS, these officers observed and approached the car

16  and discovered the body, later determined to be a murder

17  victim killed by the man driving the car, and

18         WHEREAS, upon the discovery of the body by the

19  officers, the man driving the car commenced firing at the

20  officers, and

21         WHEREAS, during the ensuing gun battle Detective

22  McManus and Officer Guerra were wounded as they and Officer

23  Pena returned fire, killing the man in the car, and

24         WHEREAS, Officer Martinez, then an unarmed trainee, at

25  great risk to himself, left his police vehicle and directed

26  drivers and pedestrians away from the scene of the gunfire,

27  and

28         WHEREAS, Detective McManus was awarded the Miami-Dade

29  Police Department's Gold Medal of Valor, Purple Heart, and

30  Distinguished Officer of the Month Awards for his actions, and

31  Officers Guerra, Martinez, and Pena were awarded the

  1  Miami-Dade Police Department's Silver Medal of Valor for their

  2  actions, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  5  Florida:

  6

  7         That the House of Representatives of the State of

  8  Florida commends Detective Chris McManus, Officer Julian

  9  Guerra, Officer Yojans Martinez, and Officer Mario Pena for

10  their heroism and dedication to duty in the face of grave

11  danger.

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

13  be presented to Detective Chris McManus, Officer Julian

14  Guerra, Officer Yojans Martinez, and Officer Mario Pena as a

15  tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
