  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing the Taylor County High

  3         School Bulldogs, 1997 Class 3A State High

  4         School Football Champions.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, on December 19, 1997, the Taylor County High

  7  School Bulldogs won the first state football championship in

  8  Taylor County High School history, and

  9         WHEREAS, with a full one-third of Taylor County's

10  population in attendance at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on the

11  University of Florida campus, the Taylor County High School

12  Bulldogs defeated the Clewiston Tigers 14-6, and

13         WHEREAS, led by Head Coach Shaw Maddox, in just his

14  second year as the Bulldogs' head coach, and a dedicated group

15  of assistant coaches, the Bulldogs captured one of only two

16  state championships in the history of Taylor County High

17  School, and

18         WHEREAS, following an 8-2 regular season, Taylor County

19  won its district with exciting victories over rivals Jefferson

20  County, 24-21, and Florida High, 55-20, and

21         WHEREAS, the Bulldogs won their first-round playoff

22  game against Hamilton County 25-6, and then advanced to the

23  regional semifinals with a 41-0 victory over Holmes County,

24  and

25         WHEREAS, Taylor County then defeated

26  Jacksonville-Bolles by a score of 41-14, and Trinity Christian

27  Academy 33-21 to reach the championship game, and

28         WHEREAS, in defeating Clewiston in the championship

29  game, Class 3A High School "Player of the Year," Varian "Bear"

30  Dunnell, rushed for 217 yards, placing him fifth on the

31  state's all-time championship game rushing list, and, with 41

  1  carries, was one carry short of breaking the record for

  2  carries in a state championship game, thus earning him Most

  3  Valuable Player honors for the state championship, and

  4         WHEREAS, it is with great pride and admiration that the

  5  citizens of Perry, Florida, and of Taylor County honor the

  6  team members and coaching staff of the Taylor County High

  7  School Bulldogs for the achievement of their championship

  8  season, NOW, THEREFORE,

10  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

11  Florida:

13         That the House of Representatives of the State of

14  Florida hereby recognizes and congratulates the Taylor County

15  High School Bulldogs, 1997 Class 3A State High School Football

16  Champions.
