  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the Florida National

  3         Guard and designating April 15, 1998, as

  4         Florida National Guard Day.

  5

  6         WHEREAS, the Florida National Guard is the direct

  7  descendant organization of the first Spanish militia companies

  8  formed in St. Augustine in 1565, and continues to serve the

  9  State of Florida under the Department of Military Affairs and

10  the Adjutant General of Florida as the true and organized

11  militia, and

12         WHEREAS, during 1997, the Florida National Guard

13  mobilized to state active duty to support the state during

14  Hurricane Danny and during a period of flooding in North

15  Florida and to perform humanitarian relief operations during

16  tornado recovery in Central Florida, and

17         WHEREAS, the Florida Army National Guard consistently

18  performs in an outstanding manner in United States Army

19  Missions at home and overseas, and the Florida Air National

20  Guard, which provides air defense for the peninsula of Florida

21  and the southeastern United States, recently received an

22  outstanding rating on a United States Air Force operational

23  readiness inspection for the first time in the history of the

24  unit, and

25         WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the service of

26  the Florida National Guard, which currently has soldiers

27  deployed in Kuwait and airmen serving in Bosnia and Saudi

28  Arabia, by designating April 15, 1998, as Florida National

29  Guard Day in the State of Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  3

  4         That the House of Representatives expresses its

  5  heartfelt gratitude to the Florida National Guard for its true

  6  and faithful service to the State of Florida and the United

  7  States of America and hereby designates April 15, 1998, as

  8  Florida National Guard Day.

  9         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

10  be presented to Major General Ronald O. Harrison, Adjutant

11  General of the State of Florida, as a tangible token of the

12  sentiments expressed herein.
