  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing John A. McKinney, Dade

  3         County educator.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, John A. McKinney was born in Miami and grew up

  6  in Overtown, and

  7         WHEREAS, John A. McKinney graduated from Florida A&M

  8  University with a degree in history, and later earned a

  9  master's degree at Barry University and a doctorate in

10  education from Nova University, and

11         WHEREAS, during military service John A. McKinney

12  discovered his love for teaching, and upon completion of his

13  military duty in 1961, he returned to Miami where he taught at

14  Poinciana Park, Allapattah, and Kelsey Pharr elementary

15  schools, and served as coordinator of social studies for Dade

16  County public schools, and

17         WHEREAS, in 1972, John A. McKinney was named principal

18  at Holmes Elementary School and served as principal there for

19  five years before becoming principal of the Central High

20  School Adult Education Center, and

21         WHEREAS, in 1992, John A. McKinney was named the first

22  principal of the William H. Turner Technical Arts High School,

23  serving there until 1996, and

24         WHEREAS, during his career, John A. McKinney received

25  hundreds of civic and education awards, including recognition

26  as one of the 500 Male Role Models of Excellence, and

27         WHEREAS, after retiring as principal of the William H.

28  Turner Technical Arts High School, John A. McKinney continued

29  teaching as an adjunct professor of education at Nova

30  University, and

  1         WHEREAS, John A. McKinney died on September 3, 1997,

  2  and

  3         WHEREAS, John A. McKinney will long be remembered by

  4  the many citizens of Dade County whose lives he touched, not

  5  only for his 35 years of educational and community work, but

  6  for his caring and compassionate attention to the needs of

  7  others, and

  8         WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the House

  9  of Representatives of the State of Florida recognize John A.

10  McKinney for his outstanding service as an educator, NOW,

11  THEREFORE,

13  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

14  Florida:

15

16         That the House of Representatives of the State of

17  Florida hereby recognizes John A. McKinney for 35 years of

18  outstanding service as an educator in the State of Florida.

19         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution

20  be presented to Rhonda McKinney, Mario McKinney, Chauncey

21  McKinney, and JaRon McKinney as a tangible token of the

22  sentiments expressed herein.
