2 A resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary
3 of Pensacola Junior College.

5 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College was the first public
6 community college established under an act of the 1947 Florida
7 Legislature and signed into law by Governor LeRoy Collins, and
8 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College established its
9 operations on the corner of Cervantes and Palafox Streets on
10 September 8, 1948, in the City of Pensacola, and admitted its
11 first students on September 13, 1948, and
12 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College has served all
13 citizens of Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties since that time,
14 with current facilities in Pensacola, Warrington, Milton,
15 NAS/Pensacola, and Downtown Pensacola, and
16 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Presidents Henry L.
17 Ashmore, T. Felton Harrison, Horace E. Hartsell, and
18 President-elect Charles A. Atwell, along with members of the
19 Board of Trustees, Pensacola Junior College has served the
20 community with ever-expanding higher education opportunities,
21 and
22 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College has provided higher
23 education opportunities to thousands of students since 1948
24 and cultural, athletic, and social opportunities to many
25 thousands more during the same period, and
26 WHEREAS, Pensacola Junior College has provided
27 associate in arts degree transfer opportunities, associate in
28 science degree career opportunities, and invaluable assistance
29 to business, industry, and government for fifty years, and
30 WHEREAS, on September 13, 1998, Pensacola Junior
31 College will celebrate its first half-century of service to

1 Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties and to the State of Florida,
2 NOW, THEREFORE,

4 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
5 Florida:

7 That the House of Representatives pauses in its
8 deliberations to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of Pensacola
9 Junior College and to congratulate and commend the Board of
10 Trustees and the faculty, administration, staff, students, and
11 alumni of Pensacola Junior College on their academic
12 accomplishments and service to the community and the State of
13 Florida, and wish them well in all future endeavors.
