  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing the American Cancer

  3         Society and the Buddy Check program.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer

  6  among women in Florida and is the second highest cause of

  7  cancer deaths among the state's female population, and

  8         WHEREAS, of the 178,000 women in the United States that

  9  are projected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during 1998,

10  11,800 are expected to be citizens of Florida, and

11         WHEREAS, of the women in Florida who will learn they

12  have breast cancer, 2,900 are expected to die in 1998, and

13         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society, in partnership

14  with other entities, has created the Buddy Check program to

15  aid in reminding women of monthly breast self-exams and yearly

16  mammograms and clinical exams, and

17         WHEREAS, fear and silence are the best friends of

18  cancer, and encouraging women to take action by talking about

19  breast cancer helps save women's lives through early detection

20  which increases survival treatment and options, NOW,

21  THEREFORE,

23  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

24  Florida:

26         That the Florida House of Representatives hereby

27  recognizes the American Cancer Society's Buddy Check program

28  as important in the fight against breast cancer and urges all

29  women to recognize the risks associated with breast cancer and

30  take preventive and supportive steps of the Buddy Check
