  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commemorating the 75th anniversary

  3         of the George Merrick Troop 7 of Coral Gables.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, George Merrick introduced scouting to the City

  6  of Coral Gables on March 15, 1922, when he organized Boy Scout

  7  Troop 7, and

  8         WHEREAS, since its beginning, George Merrick Troop 7

  9  has been an integral part of the history of Coral Gables,

10  providing the city with outstanding youths, many of whom have

11  distinguished themselves in leadership roles, both locally and

12  nationally, and

13         WHEREAS, more than 3,000 area boys have benefited from

14  the lessons that scouting has afforded, and more than 160 have

15  attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the ultimate rank in boy

16  scouting, and

17         WHEREAS, members, past and present, of George Merrick

18  Troop 7 of Coral Gables, Inc., have participated in such civic

19  activities as cleaning up the Miami River and the Coral Gables

20  waterways, restoration of local churches, distribution of

21  Goodwill bags and literature on drug prevention, fundraising

22  for mentally and physically disabled persons, and food and

23  clothing drives, safety promotions, and historic-flag

24  presentations, and

25         WHEREAS, the history of this troop was highlighted on

26  March 15, 1998, when 75 years of scouting in Coral Gables was

27  commemorated by the national organization, Boy Scouts of

28  America, and George Merrick Troop 7 was recognized for its

29  uninterrupted service to its community and its nation, NOW,

30  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  2  Florida:

  4         That the Florida House of Representatives joins the

  5  City of Coral Gables in recognizing the accomplishments of

  6  George Merrick Troop 7 of Coral Gables, Inc., on the occasion

  7  of its 75th anniversary and commending the troop for its

  8  strong commitment to public service.

  9         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

10  be presented to George Merrick Troop 7 of Coral Gables, Inc.,

11  as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
