  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution commending Senator James T.

  3         Hargrett, Jr.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, James T. Hargrett, Jr., was born in Tampa,

  6  Florida on July 31, 1942, into an established Florida family

  7  whose ancestors distinguished themselves in public service

  8  over a century ago, and

  9         WHEREAS, James T. Hargrett, Jr., son of James T. Sr.

10  and Mayme, grew up in the Belmont Heights area of Tampa,

11  attended local public schools, graduated from Middleton Senior

12  High School, and went on to earn two college degrees, a

13  Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College, and a Masters of

14  Business Administration at Atlanta University, and

15         WHEREAS, James T. Hargrett, Jr., is married to Berlyn,

16  an educator for many years, and they are proud parents of two

17  adult children, Crystal and James III, and

18         WHEREAS, James T. Hargrett, Jr., has accomplished

19  success as a businessman of several prosperous local

20  businesses, is actively involved in community organizations,

21  and is a member of numerous boards and committees. His

22  participation as a member of the University of Tampa Board of

23  Trustees, the United Way of Hillsborough County, Inc., the

24  Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the Tampa Urban League, and

25  the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce has been that of an

26  innovator and achiever, and

27         WHEREAS, Senator Hargrett has been a champion for the

28  betterment of the Ybor City National Historic Landmark

29  District and its citizens during his pre-legislative days, his

30  10 years in the House of Representatives, and most recently

31  during his 6 years in the Senate, and

  1         WHEREAS, in 1992 Senator Hargrett was the prime

  2  legislative advocate for the successful drafting, passage, and

  3  implementation of the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing

  4  Act, which has made the dream of home ownership a reality for

  5  hundreds of hard working, everyday people across Florida and

  6  stimulated the state's economy by at least $1.3 billion over

  7  the first 3 years, and

  8         WHEREAS, Senator Hargrett has been a consistent

  9  supporter of the rich multi-cultural heritage of the Ybor City

10  National Historic Landmark District and has been a driving

11  force in obtaining financial support from the State of Florida

12  for the preservation of the priceless buildings that house the

13  mutual-aid societies of the ethnic groups that founded and

14  breathed life into Ybor City, and

15         WHEREAS, Senator Hargrett has worked on legislative

16  initiatives and appropriations which ensure a balance between

17  regulatory needs, historic preservation, and economic

18  development enabling, among other things, the preservation of

19  unique balconies, vibrant storefronts, and an eclectic

20  mixed-use in the Ybor City Historic Landmark District, NOW,

21  THEREFORE,

23  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

24  Florida:

25

26         That the House of Representatives does hereby commend

27  Senator James T. "Jim" Hargrett, Jr., for his accomplishments

28  in business, local leadership, and representation of his

29  community and the State of Florida.

  1         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

  2  be presented to Senator James T. Hargrett, Jr., as a tangible
