1 House Resolution
2 A resolution encouraging the observance of the
3 Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the
4 Holocaust and Yom Hashoah.

6 WHEREAS, the year 1998 marks the fifty-third
7 anniversary of the victories of the United States Armed Forces
8 and the Allies over the German National Socialists regime,
9 ending the war in Europe during World War II, and
10 WHEREAS, this great military victory brought the
11 liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the
12 Holocaust, during which Nazi Germany conducted the planned,
13 systematic annihilation of European Jews and other groups, and
14 WHEREAS, the war-hardened United States soldiers not
15 only liberated the Nazi concentration camps, but also extended
16 their tender compassion and generosity to those few survivors
17 of these camps, and
18 WHEREAS, Americans recognize that each individual
19 citizen is responsible for eternal vigilance against all
20 tyranny and for speaking out against such tyranny, and
21 WHEREAS, in 1994 the Florida Legislature mandated that
22 the history of the Holocaust be taught in public schools, in a
23 manner that leads to an investigation of human behavior, an
24 understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and
25 stereotyping, and an examination of what it means to be a
26 responsible and respectful person, for the purposes of
27 encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society
28 and nurturing and protecting democratic values and
29 institutions, and
30 WHEREAS, under federal law, the United States Holocaust
31 Memorial Museum designated April 19, 1998, through April 26,

2 Holocaust and April 23, 1998, as the international Day of
3 Remembrance, known as Yom Hashoah, NOW, THEREFORE,

5 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
6 Florida:

8 That the House of Representatives of the State of
9 Florida hereby encourages the citizens of the state to observe
10 the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, and
11 Yom Hashoah, in memory of the victims and survivors of the
12 Holocaust, and their liberators.
