2 A resolution designating October 1998 as Breast
3 Cancer Awareness Month.

5 WHEREAS, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer
6 among women in Florida and is the second highest cause of
7 cancer deaths among the state's female population, and
8 WHEREAS, of the 178,700 women in the United States that
9 are projected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during 1998,
10 11,800 are expected to be citizens of Florida, and
11 WHEREAS, of the women in Florida who will learn they
12 have breast cancer, 2,900 are expected to die in 1998, and
13 WHEREAS, the National Association of Breast Cancer
14 Organizations has designated October as Breast Cancer
15 Awareness Month across the nation, NOW, THEREFORE,

17 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
18 Florida:

20 That the Florida House of Representatives hereby
21 declares October 1998 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in
22 Florida and urges all women to recognize the risks associated
23 with breast cancer and take preventive steps to minimize those
24 risks and engage in early detection methods such as
25 mammography.
