2 A resolution in recognition of Dr. John
3 Dunworth.

5 WHEREAS, Dr. John Dunworth has served as a classroom
6 teacher, an assistant principal, a principal, an assistant
7 superintendent, and a district superintendent of schools, as
8 well as a professor, dean, and college president, and
9 WHEREAS, Dr. Dunworth earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees
10 from the University of California, and received an Ed.D. in
11 educational administration and supervision from the University
12 of Southern California, and
13 WHEREAS, Dr. Dunworth has contributed numerous
14 publications to the educational profession and is well known
15 as a public speaker, and
16 WHEREAS, Dr. John Dunworth is past president of George
17 Peabody College for Teachers, where he served from 1974 until
18 1979, and
19 WHEREAS, prior to his appointment as President of
20 Peabody College, Dr. Dunworth served for over seven years as
21 Dean of the Teachers College and Professor of Educational
22 Administration at Ball State University, one of the largest
23 teacher education institutions in the United States, and
24 WHEREAS, he has also held the position of Director of
25 Dependents Schools for the Department of Defense in the
26 Pacific and Far East, and
27 WHEREAS, following his assignment as the first Dean of
28 the College of Education at the University of West Florida,
29 Dr. Dunworth accepted the post of Superintendent of the Santa
30 Ana Unified School District in California, one of the ten
31 largest school systems in that state, and

1 WHEREAS, after retirement in 1985 he was invited to
2 serve as the Jones Distinguished University Professor at
3 Emporia State University in Kansas, and later as an interim
4 dean of education in the State University System of
5 California, and
6 WHEREAS, Dr. John Dunworth recently came to the
7 forefront of public attention when he volunteered to take over
8 as the principal of Munson Elementary School in Santa Rosa
9 County, for the yearly salary of $1, and
10 WHEREAS, in 1997, Santa Rosa County school
11 administrators recommended closing Munson Elementary School
12 because of declining enrollment, dismal test scores, and high
13 costs, and
14 WHEREAS, when parents put up a fight to keep the
15 school, the school board decided to give the school one more
16 chance, and extend the life of the school for another year,
17 and
18 WHEREAS, it was at that point that Dr. Dunworth took
19 over as principal of Munson Elementary and turned the school's
20 fortunes around, and
21 WHEREAS, Munson Elementary now boasts a 15 percent
22 increase in enrollment, and has added three teachers to its
23 staff, and
24 WHEREAS, teachers at Munson Elementary focus on
25 technology and innovative learning methods, and
26 WHEREAS, with 84 computers in the school, the school
27 has the highest ratio of computers to students in the school
28 district, and
29 WHEREAS, under the leadership of Dr. Dunworth's
30 successor, Principal David Johnson, Munson Elementary School

1 is now working on a program to begin placing computers in
2 students' homes, and
3 WHEREAS, Dr. John Dunworth's selfless contribution to
4 the success of the Munson Elementary School should serve as an
5 example, not just to educators and school administrators, but
6 to people in all fields of endeavor, and
7 WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the Florida
8 Senate honor Dr. John Dunworth, NOW, THEREFORE,
9
10 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
11
12 That the Florida Senate honors Dr. John Dunworth for
13 his outstanding career as an educator and for his
14 contributions to the Munson Elementary School in Santa Rosa
15 County.
