  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to campaign financing; amending

  3         s. 106.09, F.S.; increasing penalties for

  4         making certain illegal campaign contributions;

  5         providing an effective date.

  7  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  8

  9         Section 1.  Section 106.09, Florida Statutes, is

10  amended to read:

11         106.09  Cash contributions and contribution by

12  cashier's checks.--

13         (1)  No person shall make or accept a cash contribution

14  or contribution by means of a cashier's check in excess of

15  $100.

16         (2)(a)  Any person who makes or accepts a contribution

17  in an amount of $100,000 or more in violation of this section

18  is guilty of a felony of the first degree, punishable as

19  provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

20         (b)  Any person who makes or accepts a contribution in

21  an amount of $20,000 or more but less than $100,000 in

22  violation of this section is guilty of a felony of the second

23  degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or

24  s. 775.084.

25         (c)  Any person who makes or accepts a contribution in

26  an amount of $300 or more but less than $20,000 in violation

27  of this section is guilty of a felony of the third degree,

28  punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s.

29  775.084.

30         (d)  Any person who makes or accepts a contribution in

31  an amount more than $100 but less than $300 in violation of

  1  this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree,

  2  punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

  3         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
