2 An act relating to osteoporosis; amending s.
3 627.6409, F.S.; expanding the required
4 insurance coverage for osteoporosis-related
5 matters; providing an effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. Section 627.6409, Florida Statutes, is
10 amended to read:
11 627.6409 Coverage for osteoporosis screening,
12 diagnosis, treatment, and management.--Any health insurance
13 policy that covers a resident of this state and that is
14 issued, amended, delivered, or renewed in this state after
15 October 1, 1996, must provide coverage for the medically
16 necessary diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis for
17 high-risk individuals, including, but not limited to,
18 estrogen-deficient individuals who are at clinical risk for
19 osteoporosis, individuals who have vertebral abnormalities,
20 individuals who are receiving long-term glucocorticoid
21 (steroid) therapy, individuals who have primary
22 hyperparathyroidism, and individuals who have a family history
23 of osteoporosis. Such treatment must provide coverage for
24 bone-mass density tests when deemed medically necessary. This
25 section does not apply to specified-accident,
26 specified-disease, hospital-indemnity, Medicare supplement, or
27 long-term-care health insurance policies or to the state
28 employee health insurance program.
29 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
