2 An act relating to the high school grading
3 system; amending s. 232.2463, F.S.; revising
4 the high school grading system; providing an
5 effective date.

7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. Section 232.2463, Florida Statutes, is
10 amended to read:
11 232.2463 High school grading system.--The grading
12 system and interpretation of letter grades used in public high
13 schools shall be as follows:
14 (1) Grade "A" equals 94 percent through 100 percent,
15 has a grade point average value of 4, and is defined as
16 "outstanding progress."
17 (2) Before the 1999-2000 school year, grade "B" equals
18 85 percent through 93 percent, has a grade point average value
19 of 3, and is defined as "above average progress." For the
20 1999-2000 school year and each year thereafter, grade "B"
21 equals 90 percent through 93 percent, has a grade point
22 average value of 3.5, and is defined as "above average
23 progress."
24 (3) For the 1999-2000 school year and each year
25 thereafter, the grade "B-" equals 85 percent through 89
26 percent and has a grade point average value of 3.
27 (4)(3) Before the 1997-1998 school year, grade "C"
28 equals 75 percent through 84 percent, has a grade point
29 average value of 2, and is defined as "average progress." For
30 the 1997-1998 school year through the 1998-1999 school year
31 and each year thereafter, grade "C" equals 77 percent through

1 84 percent, has a grade point average value of 2, and is
2 defined as "average progress." For the 1999-2000 school year
3 and each year thereafter, grade "C" equals 81 percent through
4 84 percent, has a grade point average value of 2.5, and is
5 defined as "average progress."
6 (5) For the 1999-2000 school year and each year
7 thereafter, grade "C-" equals 77 percent through 80 percent
8 and has a grade point average value of 2.
9 (6)(4) Before the 1997-1998 school year, grade "D"
10 equals 65 percent through 74 percent, has a grade point
11 average value of 1, and is defined as "lowest acceptable
12 progress." For the 1997-1998 school year through the
13 1998-1999 school year and each year thereafter, grade "D"
14 equals 70 percent through 76 percent, has a grade point
15 average value of 1, and is defined as "lowest acceptable
16 progress." For the 1999-2000 school year and each year
17 thereafter, grade "D" equals 73 percent through 76 percent,
18 has a grade point average value of 1.5, and is defined as
19 "lowest acceptable progress."
20 (7) For the 1999-2000 school year and each year
21 thereafter, grade "D-" equals 70 percent through 72 percent
22 and has a grade point average value of 1.
23 (8)(5) Before the 1997-1998 school year, grade "F"
24 equals zero percent through 64 percent, has a grade point
25 average value of zero, and is defined as "failure." For the
26 1997-1998 school year and each year thereafter, grade "F"
27 equals zero percent through 69 percent, has a grade point
28 average value of zero, and is defined as "failure."
29 (9)(6) Grade "I" equals zero percent, has a grade
30 point average value of zero, and is defined as "incomplete."

1 For the purposes of class ranking, school districts may
2 exercise a weighted grading system.
3 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
