  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to road designations;

  3         designating a portion of State Road 9 from 58th

  4         Street to County Line Road as the "Carrie P.

  5         Meek Road"; directing the Department of

  6         Transportation to erect suitable markers;

  7         providing an effective date.

  8

  9         WHEREAS, Congresswoman Carrie Meek, the first

10  African-American elected to Congress from Florida since

11  Reconstruction, has had a successful career as a public

12  servant, college administrator, and educator, and

13         WHEREAS, Congresswoman Meek was elected to the United

14  States House of Representatives in 1992 from Florida's

15  Seventeenth Congressional District, and was appointed a member

16  of the powerful House Appropriations Committee that funds all

17  executive branch programs and independent agencies, and

18         WHEREAS, Representative Meek has championed efforts to

19  create new jobs through federal and private-sector initiatives

20  and has worked diligently to use the resources of government

21  to promote economic opportunity, and

22         WHEREAS, as a new member of Congress, Representative

23  Meek introduced legislation that subsequently passed Congress

24  and was signed into law by the President to provide retirement

25  security for household workers, and

26         WHEREAS, Congresswoman Meek played a significant role

27  in providing over $100 million in federal assistance to help

28  rebuild Dade County after the devastation caused by Hurricane

29  Andrew, and

30         WHEREAS, Representative Carrie Meek is a strong

31  advocate for senior citizens, NOW, THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

  2

  3         Section 1.  (1)  State Road 9 from 58th Street to

  4  County Line Road is designated as the "Carrie P. Meek Road."

  5         (2)  The Department of Transportation is directed to

  6  erect suitable markers designating the "Carrie P. Meek Road."

  7         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  8  law.
