11  Senator Sullivan moved the following amendment:

13         Senate Amendment 

14         On page 41, lines 8 - 24, delete those lines

15

16  and insert:  229.592, and 229.593.  To further this intent,

17  the Commissioner of Education shall appoint a Teacher

18  Preparation Program Committee for the purpose of reviewing the

19  required competencies established in Florida Statute and State

20  Board of Education rules for each state-approved teacher

21  preparation program.  The committee shall consist of

22  representatives from presidents of public and private colleges

23  and universities, deans of colleges of education, presidents

24  of community colleges, district school superintendents, and

25  high-performing teachers.  The committee shall ensure that

26  teacher preparation requirements are focused on the knowledge,

27  skills, and abilities essential to instruction in the Sunshine

28  State Standards, with a clear emphasis on the importance of

29  reading at all levels.  The committee shall report is

30  recommendations to the State Board of Education by January 1,

31  2000, and at that time may be dissolved. The State Board of
