  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to public secondary schools;

  3         providing legislative intent; providing a

  4         class-size goal for math and science classes by

  5         the end of the 2002-2003 school year; providing

  6         an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  (1)  The technical and scientific skills of

11  this state's workforce are a crucial component of its economic

12  competitiveness. High academic performance in math and science

13  are necessary for the acquisition of these skills by Florida's

14  students.

15         (2)  It is the intent of the Legislature that limiting

16  class sizes in public secondary school math and physical

17  science classes will provide an environment of focus and

18  attention necessary to produce a nationally and

19  internationally competitive high-technology workforce. To the

20  extent possible, it is the goal of this state that classes

21  offered in public secondary schools in math and physical

22  science be limited to no more than 20 students-per-class by

23  the end of school year 2002-2003.

24         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

25  law.
