2 An act relating to the Florida Postsecondary
3 Student Assistant Grant Program; amending s.
4 240.4097, F.S.; revising eligibility
5 requirements for the Florida Postsecondary
6 Student Assistance Grant Program; providing an
7 effective date.

9 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (2) of section
12 240.4097, Florida Statutes, 1998 Supplement, is amended to
13 read:
14 240.4097 Florida Postsecondary Student Assistance
15 Grant Program; eligibility for grants.--
16 (2)(a) Florida postsecondary student assistance grants
17 through the State Student Financial Assistance Trust Fund may
18 be made only to full-time degree-seeking students enrolled in
19 programs of at least 60 semester credit hours or 90 quarter
20 credit hours in duration who meet the general requirements for
21 student eligibility as provided in s. 240.404, except as
22 otherwise provided in this section. Such grants shall be
23 awarded for the amount of demonstrated unmet need for tuition
24 and fees and may not exceed a total of $1,500 per academic
25 year, or as specified in the General Appropriations Act, to
26 any applicant. A demonstrated unmet need of less than $200
27 shall render the applicant ineligible for a Florida
28 postsecondary student assistance grant. Recipients of such
29 grants must have been accepted at a postsecondary institution
30 that is located in the state and that is:

1 1. A private nursing diploma school approved by the
2 Florida Board of Nursing; or
3 2. An institution either licensed by the State Board
4 of Independent Colleges and Universities or exempt from
5 licensure pursuant to s. 246.085(1)(a), excluding those
6 institutions the students of which are eligible to receive a
7 Florida private student assistance grant pursuant to s.
8 240.4095.
9 3. An institution receiving biennial licensure by the
10 State Board of Nonpublic Career Education, which is
11 institutionally accredited by an agency recognized by the
12 United States Department of Education.

14 No student may receive an award for more than the equivalent
15 of 9 semesters or 14 quarters in a period of not more than 6
16 consecutive years, except as otherwise provided in s.
17 240.404(3).
18 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
