  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing Abhishek Gupta and 14

  3         other young people whose combined efforts

  4         raised nearly $60,000 for the benefit of local

  5         charities and victims of Hurricane Mitch.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, a group of 15 young people between the ages of

  8  7 and 17, after forming a nonprofit organization known as

  9  "Clothes, Food, and Education for the Poor and Needy," worked

10  together in the fall of 1998 to raise funds that were

11  distributed to the Fort Lauderdale's Sen-Sentinel Children's

12  Fund, the Miami Herald's Wishbook, other local charities, and

13  victims of Hurricane Mitch in South America, and

14         WHEREAS, this small group of determined young people,

15  who are the children of employees of Health Care Systems of

16  Fort Lauderdale, accomplished this project by distributing

17  fliers in neighborhoods, obtaining sponsorships from

18  corporations, and receiving matching donations from private

19  donors and the McCormick Tribune Foundation, and

20         WHEREAS, Abhishek Gupta, along with Andrew, Connie, and

21  Laurel, presented a check to First Lady Hillary Clinton and to

22  editors of the Miami Herald and the Sen-Sentinel in Fort

23  Lauderdale, and Abhishek Gupta traveled to South America and

24  personally distributed a portion of the donations to

25  organizations that provide medical care to children in

26  Honduras, and

27         WHEREAS, because of the energy and enthusiasm of this

28  group of dedicated youngsters, other children in the south

29  Florida community enjoyed a happier Holiday Season and many

30  children in Central America received help and assistance, NOW,

31  THEREFORE,

  1  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  2

  3         That the Florida Senate commends Abhishek Gupta and the

  4  other young people who assisted in the fund-raising efforts of

  5  the organization Clothes, Food, and Education for the Poor and

  6  Needy.

  7         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

  8  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Abhishek

  9  Gupta as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
