  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution recognizing Abhishek Gupta and

  3         other young people whose combined efforts

  4         raised nearly $60,000 for the benefit of local

  5         charities and victims of Hurricane Mitch.

  6

  7         WHEREAS, a group of 11 young people between the ages of

  8  7 and 17, after forming a nonprofit organization known as

  9  "Clothes, Food, and Education for the Poor and Needy," worked

10  together in the fall of 1998 to raise funds that were

11  distributed to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel Children's

12  Fund, the Miami Herald Wishbook, other local charities, and

13  victims of Hurricane Mitch in South America, and

14         WHEREAS, this small group of determined young people

15  accomplished this project by distributing fliers in

16  neighborhoods, obtaining sponsorships from corporations, and

17  receiving matching donations from private donors and the

18  McCormick Tribune Foundation, and

19         WHEREAS, Abhishek Gupta, along with Constance Campbell,

20  Hakeem Campbell, Adam Deitsch, Diana Deitsch, Shawn Krueger,

21  Edward McDuffie, Monique McDuffie, Laurel Muse, Mayank Vijay,

22  and Samantha Voehringer, presented a check to First Lady

23  Hillary Clinton and to editors of the Miami Herald and the

24  Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, and Abhishek Gupta traveled

25  to South America and personally distributed a portion of the

26  donations to organizations that provide medical care to

27  children in Honduras, and

28         WHEREAS, because of the energy and enthusiasm of this

29  group of dedicated youngsters, other children in the south

30  Florida community enjoyed a happier Holiday Season and many

  1  children in Central America received help and assistance, NOW,

  2  THEREFORE,

  4  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

  5

  6         That the Florida Senate commends Abhishek Gupta and the

  7  other young people who assisted in the fund-raising efforts of

  8  the organization Clothes, Food, and Education for the Poor and

  9  Needy.

10         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

11  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Abhishek

12  Gupta, the other 10 young people, and his fellow members of

13  Clothes, Food, and Education for the Poor and Needy as a

14  tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
