  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to Palm Beach County; providing

  3         for the election of school board members of

  4         Palm Beach County from single-member districts

  5         within the school board district; providing for

  6         a referendum; providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  The Palm Beach County School Board shall

11  consist of 11 members, who must reside in and be elected from

12  single-member districts. The single-member districts,

13  cumulatively, shall comprise the entire school board district

14  and must be as nearly equal in population as practicable. Each

15  school board member shall be nominated and elected only by the

16  qualified electors who reside in the same district as the

17  member.

18         Section 2.  The Palm Beach County School Board shall

19  provide for the orderly transition to election from

20  single-member districts as the terms of incumbent school board

21  members expire.

22         Section 3.  This act, except for this section, which

23  shall take effect upon becoming a law, shall take effect only

24  upon its approval by a majority vote of those qualified

25  electors of Palm Beach County voting in a referendum to be

26  held by the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County

27  in conjunction with the next general election.
