  1                    Senate Resolution No.     

  2         A resolution proclaiming Wednesday and

  3         Thursday, April 7 and 8, 1999, as "Miami-Dade

  4         County Days."

  5

  6         WHEREAS, Greater Miami contains more than 65,000

  7  businesses, which employ over 900,000 people, and is the site

  8  of 50 foreign consulates, 23 international trade offices, and

  9  31 bi-national Chambers of Commerce, and

10         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is a hub of international

11  trade, as evidenced by the fact that 40 percent of all U.S.

12  exports to Latin America and the Caribbean pass through the

13  Miami Customs District, that Miami International Airport ranks

14  first in the U.S. for international freight and second in the

15  number of international passengers, and that the Port of Miami

16  is the ninth-largest containerized cargo port in the U.S. and

17  is the cruise capital of the world, and

18         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is a center of world

19  finance, with 135 financial institutions and foreign agencies

20  within its boundaries, and

21         WHEREAS, the film and TV industry has made Miami-Dade

22  County one of the largest production centers in the nation,

23  where, last year, productions ranging from television

24  commercials and print ads to music videos and films totaled

25  more than $200 million, and

26         WHEREAS, despite considerable damage due to Hurricane

27  Andrew in 1992, agriculture continues to be an important

28  economic force in Miami-Dade County, and more tropical

29  vegetables are harvested there than in any county in the U.S.,

  1         WHEREAS, manufacturing is also a key industry in

  2  Miami-Dade County, with nearly 3,000 companies that employ

  3  approximately 80,000 individuals, and

  4         WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is experiencing a cultural

  5  boom in world-class entertainment and cultural activities,

  6  with more than 600 nonprofit cultural organizations offering

  7  dance, theater, music, and visual arts, and

  8         WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade community is a microcosm of the

  9  world, in which 156 countries are represented; 60 languages

10  are spoken daily; 15 languages are taught in the community's

11  schools; 69 direct, nonstop flights take passengers to Latin

12  America and the Caribbean; and trade flourishes at the U.S.

13  port located closest to Africa, and

14         WHEREAS, today the tourism industry and the spillover

15  created by the industry creates jobs for one in every six

16  residents of the Miami-Dade area, NOW, THEREFORE,

17

18  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

19

20         That the Florida Senate recognizes the many valuable

21  contributions that Miami-Dade County makes to the cultural and

22  economic well-being of this state, and, in recognition of

23  those contributions, this body designates April 7 and 8, 1999,

24  as "Miami-Dade County Days."

25         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

26  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the

27  chairperson of the Miami-Dade County legislative delegation,

28  as a token of the sentiments expressed herein.
