1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to courses of study; amending
3 s. 233.061, F.S.; authorizing certain
4 exemptions from required reproductive health or
5 HIV/AIDS instructional activities; conforming
6 terminology; providing an effective date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Subsection (3) of section 233.061, Florida
11 Statutes, 1998 Supplement, is amended to read:
12 233.061 Required instruction.--
13 (3) Any student child whose parent or guardian makes
14 written request presents to the school principal shall be
15 exempted from a signed statement that the teaching of
16 reproductive health or disease, including HIV/AIDS, its
17 symptoms, development, and treatment. A student, and the
18 viewing of pictures or motion pictures that teach about
19 disease, conflict with the religious teachings of the child's
20 religious affiliation, is exempt from such instruction; and a
21 child so exempted may not be penalized by reason of that
22 exemption. Course descriptions for comprehensive health
23 education shall not interfere with the local determination of
24 appropriate curriculum which reflects local values and
25 concerns.
26 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
27 law.
