  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to public school curricula;

  3         amending s. 233.0612, F.S.; requiring school

  4         boards to install a program in character

  5         development in the elementary schools;

  6         providing an effective date.

  8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10         Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 233.0612, Florida

11  Statutes, 1998 Supplement, is amended to read:

12         233.0612  Authorized instruction.--Each school district

13  may provide students with programs and instruction at the

14  appropriate grade levels in areas including, but not limited

15  to, the following:

16         (1)  Character development and law education. Each

17  school board shall be encouraged to install in the elementary

18  schools of the district a program in character development

19  which is the same as or similar to the Character Counts or

20  Character First! Education Series. The programs must be

21  secular in nature and stress such character qualities as

22  attentiveness, patience, and initiative.

23         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
