  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to community colleges;

  3         requiring each community college to determine

  4         the number of matriculated, degree-seeking

  5         students enrolled at the community college;

  6         providing requirements for classifying a

  7         student as matriculated and degree-seeking;

  8         requiring a report to the Department of

  9         Education; providing an effective date.

11  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13         Section 1.  (1)  Beginning in the 1999-2000 school

14  year, each state community college shall determine the number

15  of students enrolled at the community college who are

16  matriculated, degree-seeking students. A student shall be

17  classified as matriculated and degree-seeking if the student:

18         (a)  Is not enrolled in a program of advanced placement

19  or early admission;

20         (b)  Has successfully completed all remedial coursework

21  required for entry into college-level coursework that applies

22  toward an associate in arts, associate in science, or

23  baccalaureate degree;

24         (c)  Has passed all placement examinations required for

25  entry into college-level coursework that applies toward an

26  associate in arts, associate in science, or baccalaureate

27  degree; and

28         (d)  Has applied to the community college to be

29  classified as a matriculated student.

30         (2)  Each semester, the community college shall report

31  to the Department of Education the number of matriculated,

  1  degree-seeking students who are enrolled at the community

  2  college.

  3         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

  4  law.

  7                          SENATE SUMMARY

  8    Requires that, beginning in the 1999-2000 school year,
      each state community college determine the number of
  9    students enrolled at the community college who are
      classified as matriculated, degree-seeking students.
10    Provides requirements for determining such
      classification. Requires that the community college
11    report the number of matriculated, degree-seeking
      students enrolled each semester to the Department of
12    Education.
