7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

9 Section 1. Paragraph (o) of subsection (1) of section
10 236.081, Florida Statutes, 1998 Supplement, is amended to
11 read:
12 236.081 Funds for operation of schools.--If the annual
13 allocation from the Florida Education Finance Program to each
14 district for operation of schools is not determined in the
15 annual appropriations act or the substantive bill implementing
16 the annual appropriations act, it shall be determined as
17 follows:
18 (1) COMPUTATION OF THE BASIC AMOUNT TO BE INCLUDED FOR
19 OPERATION.--The following procedure shall be followed in
20 determining the annual allocation to each district for
21 operation:
22 (o) Extended-school-year program.--It is the intent of
23 the Legislature that students be provided additional
24 instruction by extending the school year to 210 days or more.
25 1. Districts may apply to the Commissioner of
26 Education for funds to be used in planning and implementing an
27 extended-school-year program of up to 210 days or more. The
28 Department of Education shall recommend to the Legislature the
29 policies necessary for full implementation of an extended
30 school year.

1 2. Each school district that provides for an extended
2 school year of up to 6 additional days per year shall receive
3 an allocation for such extension for one-half of the cost of
4 operation of schools for each additional day. For purposes of
5 this paragraph, the extension must be beyond 180 days of
6 regular classroom instruction in the typical school year. The
7 cost of operation shall be based on a pro rata share of each
8 school district's operational budget for the previous year
9 divided by the number of classroom teaching days.
10 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.

Provides that each school district that extends its
15 school year beyond 180 days of regular classroom
instruction in a typical school year shall receive an
16 allocation for such extension for one-half of the cost of
operation of schools for up to 6 extra school days per
17 year.
