  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating June 1999 as Prostate

  3         Cancer Awareness Month.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of

  6  cancer death among men, and

  7         WHEREAS, an estimated 179,300 men in the United States

  8  will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during 1999, and 13,600

  9  of them will be residents of Florida, and

10         WHEREAS, an estimated 37,000 in the United States will

11  die from prostate cancer in 1999, and 2,800 of them will be

12  residents of Florida, and

13         WHEREAS, nonwhite men in Florida have a higher risk of

14  being diagnosed with prostate cancer than white men, and

15         WHEREAS, nonwhite men in Florida who have prostate

16  cancer are more than twice as likely to die of the disease

17  than white men, and

18         WHEREAS, June is a month which commemorates men,

19  highlighted by Father's Day, NOW, THEREFORE,

21  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

22  Florida:

24         That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes

25  June 1999 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Florida, and

26  urges all men, and particularly members of high-risk

27  populations, to become aware of the risks and symptoms

28  associated with prostate cancer and to be informed about

29  screening tests, methods for early detection, and treatment.
