  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution honoring Gene Bebber upon his

  3         retirement.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, University of Miami alumnus Gene Bebber began

  6  his career at Mt. Dora High School in 1970 when he stood as

  7  head football coach overlooking the Mt. Dora Hurricane's

  8  playing field and knew that he was "home," and

  9         WHEREAS, after serving as head coach for two years,

10  Gene Bebber accepted the position of athletic director, a post

11  he was to hold for 23 years, and

12         WHEREAS, in addition to his time as head coach of the

13  Mt. Dora Hurricanes, Gene Bebber's coaching duties of the past

14  30 years include coaching junior varsity football, baseball,

15  boys' track, weightlifting, golf, and girls' tennis, and

16         WHEREAS, Gene Bebber also devoted himself to the

17  classroom, where he taught American history, American

18  government, geography, compensatory education, and physical

19  education, and

20         WHEREAS, while engaged as a teacher and coach, Gene

21  Bebber also acted as sponsor for the Key Club from 1981-1985

22  and as a class sponsor for five years for the freshman,

23  sophomore, junior, and senior classes, and

24         WHEREAS, during his career at Mt. Dora High, the

25  seemingly tireless Gene Bebber formed the Hurricane Booster

26  Club, was instrumental in having the gymnasium improved,

27  initiated the building of a much-needed field house and two

28  practice fields, and saw to it that a weight room was built

29  and furnished and later improved and expanded, and

30         WHEREAS, Gene Bebber was responsible for many

31  fundraisers for the support of the school athletic teams,

  1  ensuring that each team was always properly outfitted and

  2  equipped and that the facilities were the best to be had, and

  3         WHEREAS, on October 29, 1998, Gene Bebber retired from

  4  a long and illustrious career as educator, coach, and athletic

  5  director of Mt. Dora High School, NOW, THEREFORE,

  6

  7  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  8  Florida:

  9

10         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

11  deliberations to congratulate and honor Gene Bebber upon his

12  retirement from Mt. Dora High School.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

14  be presented to Gene Bebber as a tangible token of the

15  sentiments expressed herein.
