  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing the Florida National

  3         Guard for its faithful service to the state and

  4         nation and designating March 31, 1999, as

  5         "Florida National Guard Day."

  6

  7         WHEREAS, the Florida National Guard is the direct and

  8  lineal descendant of the first Spanish militia companies

  9  formed in St. Augustine in 1565 and continues to serve the

10  State of Florida as the true and organized militia under the

11  Department of Military Affairs and the Adjutant General of

12  Florida, and

13         WHEREAS, during 1998, the Florida National Guard

14  mobilized to state active duty three times, lending its

15  unflagging assistance during Tropical Storm Earl and in the

16  resulting flooding in North Florida, battling the wildfires

17  that ravaged the entire state, and providing humanitarian

18  support in South and Central Florida during and in the

19  aftermath of Hurricane Georges, and

20         WHEREAS, the Florida Army National Guard consistently

21  performs in a superior manner in United States Army missions,

22  both at home and abroad, with soldiers in Latin America, the

23  Caribbean, Kuwait, and Korea, while the Florida Air National

24  Guard provides air defense for the state, as well as for the

25  entire southeastern United States, and currently has airmen

26  serving in Bosnia and Saudi Arabia, and

27         WHEREAS, the Florida National Guard recently received

28  an outstanding rating following a United States Air Force

29  operational readiness inspection, a first in the history of

30  the unit, and

  1         WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the Florida National

  2  Guard be recognized for its tireless service to the state and

  3  the nation, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4

  5  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  6  Florida:

  7

  8         That the House of Representatives pauses in its

  9  deliberations to express its appreciation to the Florida

10  National Guard and to designate March 31, 1999, as "Florida

11  National Guard Day" in the State of Florida.

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

13  be presented to Major General Ronald O. Harrison, Adjutant

14  General of the State of Florida, as a tangible token of the

15  sentiments expressed herein.
