  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution supporting the application of

  3         Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties to

  4         jointly host the Pan American Games in the year

  5         2007.

  7         WHEREAS, the Pan American Games, held every four years

  8  for the 42 nations of the Pan American Sports Organization in

  9  the Western Hemisphere, have taken place on 12 occasions and

10  have been hosted by nine different nations, the United States

11  having served as host in Chicago in 1959 and in Indianapolis

12  in 1987, and

13         WHEREAS, celebrating amateur sports at their best, this

14  multisports event continues to gain in prominence and in the

15  number of sports and participants, and hosting the games would

16  be a great honor to the State of Florida and its citizens, and

17         WHEREAS, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties

18  have submitted a bid to jointly host the Pan American Games in

19  the year 2007, at which time the 16-day event is expected to

20  draw between 1.2 and 2 million spectators, with a total

21  economic impact projected to range from $256 to $358 million,

22  in addition to a possible $13 to $18 million in government

23  revenue and the creation of between 4,300 and 6,000 new jobs,

24  and

25         WHEREAS, South Florida, emerging as a cultural,

26  economic, and political focal point for the Western

27  Hemisphere, already has the facilities and infrastructure to

28  host the Pan American Games and is prepared to make any

29  capital improvements that may be necessary, and

30         WHEREAS, in an impressive exhibit of efficiency,

31  cooperation, and teamwork, the bid to attract the Pan American

  1  Games to South Florida represents the first collaborative

  2  effort of the three South Florida counties to host an

  3  international event of this magnitude, NOW, THEREFORE,

  4

  5  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

  6  Florida:

  7

  8         That the House of Representatives recognizes that the

  9  benefits offered by Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach

10  Counties are unsurpassed anywhere else in the hemisphere and

11  enthusiastically supports the bid by these counties to attract

12  the Pan American Games to South Florida in 2007.

13         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution

14  be presented to the United States Olympic Committee and the

15  South Florida 2007 Pan American Games Bid Committee as

16  tangible proof of support for, and the earnest desire of, the

17  State of Florida to be a part of this celebration of amateur

18  athletics.
