  1                         House Resolution

  2         A resolution designating April 6, 1999, as

  3         Florida State University Day in Tallahassee.

  4

  5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus at Florida State

  6  University is the oldest continuous site of higher education

  7  in Florida, and

  8         WHEREAS, Florida State University was founded as an

  9  institution of higher learning in 1851 by a legislative act

10  and began its existence in Tallahassee when it held its first

11  classes in 1857, and

12         WHEREAS, over 205,000 men and women have graduated from

13  Florida State University since its inception, and the success

14  of Florida State University as an institution is reflected in

15  the success of these graduates around the world, and

16         WHEREAS, in accordance with the university's mission

17  statement, Florida State University's faculty members have

18  been selected for their commitment to excellence in teaching,

19  their ability in research and creative activity, and their

20  interest in public service, and

21         WHEREAS, students at the university study in 17

22  colleges and schools which offer undergraduate and graduate

23  degrees in over 342 fields, and

24         WHEREAS, Florida State University was designated a

25  "Research I" university by the Carnegie Foundation in 1994,

26  placing FSU in an elite group of the nation's top research

27  universities, and

28         WHEREAS, Florida State University's graduation rate is

29  well above the national average and the best among Florida's

30  state universities, and

  1         WHEREAS, Florida State University has had five faculty

  2  Nobel laureates, including the famous physicist Paul Dirac,

  3  the father of modern physics, who is memorialized in London's

  4  Westminster Abbey, and

  5         WHEREAS, the Yahoo Internet Life magazine ranked

  6  Florida State University as one of the 100 most "wired"

  7  colleges in the nation, an indicator of the university's

  8  advanced utilization of computer network technology, and

  9         WHEREAS, while developing internationally recognized

10  programs in Fine Arts and the Performing Arts and in Basic and

11  Social Sciences, Florida State University has also developed

12  strong student life programs, including one of the major

13  Intercollegiate athletic programs in the country, and

14         WHEREAS, with a rich history of tradition and a future

15  in the forefront of the nation's major universities, it is

16  fitting and appropriate that the Florida House of

17  Representatives recognize the many achievements of Florida

18  State University, NOW, THEREFORE,

20  Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of

21  Florida:

22

23         That the House of Representatives of the State of

24  Florida hereby designates April 6, 1999, as Florida State

25  University Day in Tallahassee.
