1 House Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing the achievements of
3 the University of Florida Women's Collegiate
4 Athletic programs.

6 WHEREAS, in 1972, the University of Florida added
7 women's athletics to the university's athletic program, and
8 WHEREAS, originally funded with $18,000 in student
9 activity fees, the University of Florida's women's sports
10 program has grown to an $8 million operation that was recently
11 named the best in the nation by Sports Illustrated, and
12 WHEREAS, since the 1983-1984 school year, the
13 university's women's athletics program has never ranked lower
14 than eighth in the combined ranking for women's athletics, and
15 WHEREAS, the University of Florida's commitment to
16 excellence in women's athletics has yielded prodigious results
17 in the form of national and conference championships,
18 All-American and Southeastern Conference academic and athletic
19 honors, and Olympic medalists and participants, and
20 WHEREAS, the University of Florida women's athletic
21 teams have won twelve NCAA national team titles, which include
22 the 1998 national title in soccer, the 1992, 1996, and 1998
23 national titles in tennis, the 1982 national title in swimming
24 and diving, the 1985 and 1986 national titles in golf, and the
25 1992 national title in indoor track and field, and
26 WHEREAS, the University of Florida Women's Indoor
27 Tennis Team has won national titles in 1992, 1996, and 1998,
28 and
29 WHEREAS, the University of Florida has also won a
30 national title in Women's Gymnastics in 1982 and in Swimming
31 and Diving in 1979, and

1 WHEREAS, University of Florida women's athletics have
2 won a total of 126 national individual titles, and
3 WHEREAS, their 106 NCAA individual titles is the second
4 highest total of any women's program in the nation, and
5 WHEREAS, the University of Florida women's collegiate
6 athletic programs have produced a total of 275 athletes who
7 have garnered 1,300 All-American honors, and
8 WHEREAS, within their own athletic conference,
9 Florida's total of 64 women's team titles is the top total in
10 Southeastern Conference history, more than double the number
11 earned by any other league school, and
12 WHEREAS, Florida also boasts a total of 225 individuals
13 who have received a cumulative 577 All-Southeastern Conference
14 honors, and
15 WHEREAS, 39 University of Florida women athletes have
16 earned 51 berths in Olympic competition, 14 of whom were Gold
17 Medal winners, three of whom were Silver Medal winners, and
18 seven of whom were Bronze Medal winners, and
19 WHEREAS, nine University of Florida women's athletics
20 coaches have been named National Coach of the Year on 17
21 different occasions, and 15 University of Florida women's
22 athletics coaches have been named Southeastern Conference
23 Coach of the Year 37 times, and
24 WHEREAS, women athletes from the University of Florida
25 have been named Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Year in
26 1984, 1988, 1993, and 1994, and
27 WHEREAS, 21 University of Florida athletes from the
28 various women's athletic programs have received 28 GTE
29 Academic All-American honors, and the university has produced
30 260 athletes who have received 476 Academic All-Southeastern
31 Conference honors, and

1 WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that the Florida
2 House of Representatives recognize the University of Florida
3 women's athletic programs for its phenomenal history of
4 achievement, NOW, THEREFORE,

6 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
7 Florida:
8
9 That the House of Representatives of the State of
10 Florida hereby recognizes the numerous achievements of the
11 University of Florida Women's Collegiate Athletic programs.
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution
13 be presented to Ann Marie Rogers, University of Florida Senior
14 Women's Administrator, and Jeremy Foley, University of Florida
15 Athletics Director, as a tangible token of the sentiments
16 expressed herein.
