  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to medical treatment of certain

  3         wounds; amending s. 790.24, F.S.; revising

  4         types of injuries resulting from violence that

  5         health care practitioners are required to

  6         report; providing a penalty; providing an

  7         effective date.

  9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11         Section 1.  Section 790.24, Florida Statutes, is

12  amended to read:

13         790.24  Report of medical treatment of certain gunshot

14  wounds; penalty for failure to report.--Any physician, nurse,

15  or employee thereof and any employee of a hospital,

16  sanitarium, clinic, or nursing home knowingly treating any

17  person suffering from a gunshot wound or life-threatening

18  injury other wound indicating an act of violence, or receiving

19  a request for such treatment, shall report the same

20  immediately to the sheriff's department of the county in which

21  said treatment is administered or request therefor received.

22  Any such person willfully failing to report such treatment or

23  request therefor is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first

24  degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

25         Section 2.  This act shall take effect October 1, 1999.

28                          HOUSE SUMMARY

      Requires health care practitioners to report to the
30    county sheriff any treatment or request for treatment of
      a gunshot wound or life-threatening injury indicating an
31    act of violence. Provides a first degree misdemeanor
      penalty for failure to so report.
