  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to career education; amending

  3         s. 229.601, F.S., relating to the Florida

  4         Career Education Act; requiring the

  5         commissioner to develop procedures and

  6         resources for 4-year career plans; requiring

  7         the implementation of pilot projects in certain

  8         counties; providing an effective date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12         Section 1.  Paragraph (f) is added to subsection (2) of

13  section 229.601, Florida Statutes, to read:

14         229.601  Career education program.--

15         (2)  There is hereby established a career education

16  program in the state educational system.  The Commissioner of

17  Education and his or her designated staff shall administer

18  this program. In developing and administering the career

19  education program, the purpose of which is to promote positive

20  career opportunities for all students regardless of their

21  race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, socioeconomic

22  status, or gender, the commissioner shall:

23         (f)  Develop procedures and resources for use by all

24  school districts in providing a 4-year career plan which will

25  outline courses in grades 9 through 12 which will prepare

26  students for related entry level employment or post-secondary

27  education. The commissioner shall create and implement pilot

28  projects in Florida counties with populations in excess of 2

29  million to develop a model for statewide implementation.

30         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1999.
